Breaking the Hold of Insecurity

Insecurity overtakes so many of us in the midst of changing times. Most of us are not as resilient as Chessie. We are constantly trying to hang on to the comfortable place we had before change invaded our boundaries.

Change can come in so many different ways. The birth of a child can produce change. A new relationship can produce change. Innovation can produce change. Death can produce change. Expanding job duties can produce change. Maturing children can bring change to the whole environment in which we live. Positional changes, including geographical relocation, can really produce insecurities within us.

I believe the key to security is learning to embrace change. Insecurity is actually linked with these five major issues:

The first is FEAR. We have a measure of fear until we understand how to process what has invaded our territory. This comes from the unknown aspect of not understanding fully what has come into our scope.

The second factor is CONTROL. We lose control of a space in which we had developed a routine. We feel like our hands are being pried away from what we were comfortable manipulating.

The third is IGNORANCE or lack of understanding. A people perish because of “lack of knowledge.” The Bible also says a people perish because they do not have vision or prophetic revelation (see Prov. 29:18). Additionally, the Bible says superstition is a sign of ignorance. Ignorance is not simply having a lack of knowledge. Rather, ignorance occurs when we do not embrace the truth that accompanies the changes in our present situation. Ignorance can also occur when we are not willing to expand our horizon and develop new skills to meet our changing environment. Not knowing that there is other truth or revelation linked with the matter that we are dealing with can also lead us into ignorance.

The fourth is SELFISHNESS. We like our space the way we like it. We don’t want to give up anything for the new invader or change catalyst.

The fifth is PRIDE. Insecurity is just pride masked. We are afraid to fail when we have to expand the place of our tent. We could conclude that pride is fear of failure, ignorance, selfishness, and control all mixed together. We exalt our knowledge above that to which we need to submit rather than embracing our changing circumstances. Pride is the enemy of our Creator. Pride says, “The one who knows the best for you or the one who has brought change into your life is holding out on you or creating chaos in your life.” Don’t listen to this voice in your changing circumstances.
